Vitamin B12 Deficiency linked to Brain Shrinkage

A study from the University of Oxford has just been published in the journal of Neurology that links a deficiency in vitamin B12 levels with brain shrinkage.

The study suggests that the vitamin, found in meat, fish and milk, may help to stave off memory loss at old age. Older people with lower than average B12 levels were greater than six times more likely to experience brain shrinkage.

The study suggests that people have a balanced diet through eating meat, fish, fortified cereals or milk to help protect the brain. Brain shrinkage has been linked to a higher risk of developing dementia, though further research is needed.
