Special Effects Visionary Stan Winson dies
I didn’t mean to post about yet another death, but this is a man that has had some effect on most of us, even if we never knew his name.
Stan Winston is a man that won multiple visual effects Oscars. He created animatronic dinosaurs to compliment the digitally-animated dinosaurs of 1993′s Jurassic Park. He also won awards for his work on 1986′s Aliens and 1992′s Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
Steven Spielberg, who worked with Winston on several films, said in a statement “Stan was a fearless and courageous artist/inventor and for many projects, I rode his cutting edge from teddy bears to aliens to dinosaurs. My world would not have been the same without Stan. What I will miss most is his easy laugh every time he said to me, “Nothing is impossible.” “
With computer animated effects being so good now, with photorealistic characters like The Lord of the Rings’ character Gollum. It’s almost too easy to forget how much the dinosaurs wowed the world when Jurassic Park hit cinemas in 1993. People were seeing the film and getting right back in line to see it again. It was a turning point in the history of film, and Stan Winston and his team were a big part of that success.
He passed away on Sunday evening, surrounded by family, after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma.
