Intel’s Health Guide PHS6000 Launches

In July of 2008, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Intel’s Health Guide PHS6000: a Health-monitoring device that has been tested in many pilot programs.  The company jointly developed the programes with Aetna, Scan Health Plan, Erickson Retirement Communities and the Providence Medical Group in Oregon.  The programs were created to assess the benefits and challenges of the telehealth system with actual patients and physicians taking part.

This device uses a touch-screen PC running Windows XP, and includes a web portal to connect patients to doctors.  This device also has the advantage of being able to connect with many medical devices.  Blood-pressure monitors, glucose monitors, pulse oximeters, peak flow meters, and weight scales are just a few of the devices that it can connect to.  The computer is then able to relate the information to caregivers, who are monitoring the patient’s state of health.

“If this works effectively by mid-2009, we hope to roll it out to several hundred patients, and within a year to our entire network 105,000 member,” said Hank Osowski, senior vice president of corporate development for Scan Health.
