Getting Exercise after Back Surgery helps Speed Recovery

There’s a research review that suggests getting exercise therapy after surgery for a slipped disc. It may help people to overcome the pain and disability more quickly.

In the new review, covering fourteen previous clinical trials, researchers found that patients who received exercise therapy got over their pain and physical limitations sooner than those who hadn’t. Not only that, but there was no evidence that rehab had raised the risk of a repeat surgery. The value of post-surgery exercise therapy had been questioned, up until this point, with the primary concern being re-injury caused by exercising too soon.

Dr. Raymond Ostelo, the lead researcher, suggests that it is a “good idea” to start an exercise program as soon as possible, as well as return to daily activities, after lumbar disc surgery.

Patients should speak to their doctors about the form and duration of rehab that is best suited to their condition.
