FDA: BPA in Plastic Bottles is Not a Health Risk
The Food and Drug Administration has just given a vote of confidence to Bisphenol-A, a chemical that shows up in some baby bottles, food can linings and hard plastic water bottles.
An FDA draft assessment (PDF) released on Friday is quoted:
FDA has concluded that an adequate margin of safety exists for BPA at current levels of exposure from food contact uses.
This assessment has been released in advance of a September meeting that will have a panel of experts to discuss the subject.
Some environmental groups are skeptical, claiming that the FDA has overlooked “dozens of studies” and rely, instead, on only “flawed studies from industry.”
“It’s ironic FDA would choose to ignore dozens of studies funded by (the National Institutes of Health) — this country’s best scientists — and instead rely on flawed studies from industry,” Pete Myers, chief scientist for Environmental Health Sciences, told the AP.
