This week’s episodes of Scrubs had a few problematic areas, but were overall pretty good ones. The problems lay in the humor of the second episode especially being overly crass at times. The inappropriate comedy isn’t my cup of tea, though the episodes did provide some good clean humor as well as interesting storylines to help offset it.

“My Absence” – Dr. Cox has a rare moment of conscience while J.D. takes a brief respite from work at the hospital. Meanwhile, Turk and Carla share some big news, on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 (9:00-9:30 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode was a great one, as lessons are learned about staying true to yourself, and holding onto your values. I am not the biggest fan of the intern Denise, though. At least not her character’s comments from time to time. I do enjoy seeing her go through life lessons, though, as she’s so out of touch with other people’s emotions. Overall, though, I liked this episode rather well. It was the better of the two for the evening.

“My Comedy Show” – J.D. and Turk organize their historically unfunny annual sketch show with the new crop of interns, on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 (9:30-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode’s title leads you to believe that it’s going to be incredible. It does have a few great moments, such as the impressions of the different characters on the show done by the new interns. That was a classic scene. But other than that, there was a joke about abortion that I didn’t really like…. at all… but it was fleeting and pretty morally ambiguous, so moving on. There was a return cameo from Lavern (Nurse Roberts), the old head nurse, during a flashback to J.D. and Turk’s comedy show from when they first started at Sacred Heart. I wish Lavern was still a character on the show every week, as she represents a moral center that I love.

There was one moment, however, that was so brilliantly executed that makes it all worth it. When J.D. and Turk hug. It’s so hilarious that myself and everyone I was watching it with couldn’t stop laughing for at least an entire minute. And most of them haven’t seen that many episodes of the show.

Overall, this week’s episodes were so-so and not ones that I would show to people seeing the show for the first time. I am hoping that next week picks things back up.

This week’s episodes were terrific, but curiously absent from the cast was Dr. Chris Turk. I know that this year is definitely a year of change for the show, as they make their way toward the season finale, and perhaps the passing of the torch to a team of new Doctors for a possible ninth season (fingers crossed). Anyway, let’s get to brass tacks.

“My New Role” – When Dr. Cox becomes overwhelmed in his new role as Chief of Medicine, he does the unthinkable and reaches out to Dr. Kelso for friendship, on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3 (9:00-9:30 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode is focused on Dr. Cox in his new role as Chief of Medicine. All he wants to do is get out of his office and see patients, and all that he gets done throughout the day is paperwork and dealing with the questions and requests of employees of the hospital. It’s a great look at what happens when faced with a new role that people don’t understand from the outside.

It also features a problem that is very real in the hospitals these days, with a shortage of nurses and overworked nursing staff. It’s not an isolated problem and this episode brings that to light.

He and Dr. Kelso have a few heart to hearts during Dr. Cox’s first few days on the job, and it makes for a very entertaining and insightful look at hospital management from the upper-management’s perspective.

Dr. Cox even has a list posted next to his door of people that are either always allowed in, sometimes allowed in, and never ever ever ever ever ever allowed in. That third list has three names, which made me laugh out loud as a long-time fan of the show: Dr. Dorian, Hooch and Jordan. If you’ve been watching the show regularly, you’ll know why.

“My Lawyer’s in Love” – It takes a village to help Ted take the first step when he falls in love at first sight with a ukulele player. Meanwhile, Perry learns the hard way that he simply can’t handle everything on his plate, on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3 (9:30-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode features Ted’s accapella band. Ted Buckland is the hospital’s lawyer, who lacks confidence in his skills with ladies. Dr. Dorian and the Janitor try to help Ted out, when he sees a girl that he likes.

Also in this episode, Dr. Cox gives new intern Ed a chance to prove that he’s willing to put in the work to succeed at Sacred Heart. Ed is one of my favorite of the new interns, and it’s interesting to see where they took his character.

I really enjoyed this hour of Scrubs, and am definitely looking forward to next week’s episodes. If the show is not pickd up for a ninth year, I’ll be a sad camper.

You can watch the episodes online at ABC.com

This week, two more episodes aired, and it looks like that’s going to be the trend, as the schedule calls for two episodes a week over the next two weeks as well. ABC is being awesome to us Scrubs fans. I’m not sure what the final count of episodes is going to be for this season, but I hope that the ratings are great enough that the series is picked up for a ninth season. We should know by May.

This weeks episodes continued the storyline featuring Courteney Cox as the Chief of Medicine at Sacred Heart Hospital.

“My Saving Grace” — Desperate times call for desperate measures when lifelong adversaries Drs. Kelso and Cox ally to oust Dr. Maddox (guest starring Courteney Cox) from Sacred Heart, while Carla makes it her mission to take a self-centered, incompetent intern down a notch., on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, JANUARY 13 (9:00-9:30 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode focused on Carla’s conversation with an intern who is entirely too into herself, and after a few months had not really made any friends at the hospital. She didn’t know why, and thought it was because of the “competitive” nature of the hospital, when it was really her own attitude.

The episode moves forward at a pretty steady pace, and though it isn’t an instant classic, it does feature a change in the relationship between longtime rivals. It’s slight, but a great scene that moved the characters forward and you could see a change.

There are also some major clashes between the staff and Dr. Maddox that result in the culmination of that storyline.

“My Happy Place” – New sparks of an old romance are ignited between J.D. and Elliot when they work together to encourage to Dr. Kelso to branch out beyond the hospital coffee shop to find his new happy place, on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, JANUARY 13 (9:30-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

In this episode, the on-again off-again relationship between J.D. and Elliot has come to a point where it’s either go for it, or not. All because of a statement that Dr. Kelso makes.

It starts out with a really funny series of jokes revolving around Oprah Winfrey. (Which is called back to later on.) It then moves toward the Coffee Bucks coffee-shop.

Janitor is back, and he has the lawyer Ted doing his job without really realizing it. Dr. Cox and Dr. Turk work together in this episode as well. The end of this episode is very good and made me happy to see where the series is headed.

So far, this is the strongest season in a couple of years.

You can watch the episodes online at ABC.com

Two episodes aired last night, and it looks like this will be the trend for the next couple of weeks, at the very least. It was a definite return to form for the show, as the super quirky scenarios of the last couple of years were indeed jettisoned to bring back some of what made the show great to begin with.

Kicking things off with the first return episode, here’s the summary from ABC:

“My Jerks” — Dr. Kelso’s beautiful but unethical replacement, Dr. Maddox (played by guest star Courteney Cox), shakes things up at Sacred Heart, while J.D. struggles to manage a new crop of incompetent interns and Carla helps Elliott put her ego in check, on the season premiere of “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, JANUARY 6 (9:00-9:30 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode will repeat Jan. 7 from 8:00-8:30 p.m., ET.

Starting out pretty strongly, the episode was so fast paced that it was over before I knew it. Luckily, there was another episode to immediately follow up. This episode served two purposes. It was a reminder that the cast of Scrubs is full of characters that you enjoy spending time with each week. It was also a reminder of how great this show is, with realistic situations creating the back-bone for the comedy.

Dr. Cox and Dr. Dorian have a conversation partway through the episode, that is well directed within a vacant hospital cafeteria. This creative choice was symbolic and telling, as the conversation would be between two men, now equals, both sharing the sentiment of wanting to give up, and coming to terms with the fact that they’re at a teaching hospital.

That’s only a third of the overall story for the episode, though, as other storylines move forward as well, but I’m going to keep things moving into the second episode.

“My Last Words” — J.D. and Turk set aside their decade-long steak night tradition to comfort a dying patient, while Dr. Maddox (guest starring Courteney Cox) begins to show her true colors, on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, JANUARY 6 (9:30-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode will repeat Jan. 7 from 8:30-9:00 p.m., ET.

This episode is probably my favorite of the two. It’s a definite reminder of episodes past, but it also deals with the subject of death in a different light than the other episodes had. Dr. Dorian and Dr. Turk spend the evening, after work, with a man that is terminal. The time they spend with him is shared with us, as stories are told, and we’re brought through real emotions that one deals with when facing or dealing with death, or the death of a loved one. I feel this is one of the best episodes of the series to-date, and if this is a taste of things to come, I welcome the show back to its’ roots, and am hopeful for more seasons to come, after what is reportedly the final season for a few of the primary cast members.

The new interns are pretty hilarious as well, and share a great dynamic. I hope to see more of them as well, as the season goes on. I could easily see some of them becoming primary cast members if the show does continue to a ninth season.

The episodes, if you missed them or just want to watch them again, are going to repeat tonight at 8 and 8:30 on ABC. You can also watch them both online at ABC.com

One of my favorite TV shows, is Scrubs. I got into the show at the start of the fourth season, and immediately worked on getting caught up with this show that I discovered at what was almost the middle of it’s entire run. At least that’s what NBC would have had. But ABC owned the show.

It was a strange dynamic. ABC produced the show, NBC aired it, all because NBC took a shot on it seven years ago and it became a hit.

We’re now at the start of the eighth season, the first on ABC, and all early words that I’ve read have heralded a return to the style of the show in the first few seasons. It’ll be a good mixture of solid, award-worthy drama and zany-comedy. This could lead to a ninth season with a slightly new cast, to be woven throughout this season.

If the creativity of the show keeps up, and the new characters are good enough to carry it, I won’t mind.

The hit half-hour comedy series “Scrubs” will move to ABC for its eighth season. This irreverent and offbeat comedy will debut TUESDAY, JANUARY 6, with back-to-back episodes from 9:00-9:30 and 9:30-10:00 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network.

Beginning Monday, November 24, select episodes from the past seven seasons of “Scrubs” will be available online at www.abc.com in the site’s full episode player. Four different episodes will be available each week leading up to the series debut on ABC, including the series pilot, last season’s finale, and special episodes with guest stars Michael J. Fox, Heather Locklear, Heather Graham, Matthew Perry, Keri Russell and Elizabeth Banks. ABC.com has also launched an ‘Ask Scrubs’ feature that allows fans to upload questions to be answered by the series’ cast and creator.

“Scrubs” focuses on the unique point of view of Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian (Zach Braff). After surviving his internship and residency at Sacred Heart Hospital, J.D. is now an attending physician with his own class of interns to guide and mentor. Even though he has risen through the hospital ranks, he will continue to face many challenges in both his personal and professional life. Joining the rumpled J.D. at Sacred Heart Hospital are Dr. Chris Turk (Donald Faison), J.D.’s college buddy who is part of the elite surgical group, Turk’s wife, no-nonsense head nurse Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes), as well as the beautiful but socially awkward Dr. Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke). Former Chief of Medicine Dr. Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins) now keeps a watchful eye on the hospital staff from the coffee shop. Meanwhile, the caring yet abrasive Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley) is struggling with an identity crisis as he reevaluates his career, and the hospital janitor (Neil Flynn) — J.D.’s nemesis — never seems to miss an opportunity to harass his target.

In the premiere episode, TUESDAY, JANUARY 6 (9:00-9:30 p.m., ET), entitled “My Jerks,” Dr. Kelso’s beautiful but unethical replacement, Dr. Maddox (played by guest star Courteney Cox), shakes things up at Sacred Heart, while J.D. struggles to manage a new crop of incompetent interns and Carla helps Elliott put her ego in check.

On the second episode (9:30-10:00 p.m., ET), “My Last Words,” J.D. and Turk set aside their decade-long steak night tradition to comfort a dying patient, while Dr. Maddox (guest starring Courteney Cox) begins to show her true colors.

“Scrubs” stars Zach Braff as J.D., Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid, Donald Faison as Chris Turk, John C. McGinley as Dr. Perry Cox, Judy Reyes as Carla Espinosa, Ken Jenkins as Dr. Bob Kelso and Neil Flynn as the Janitor.

“Scrubs” has received a total of 16 Emmy nominations, including two consecutive nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2005 and 2006, and wins in 2007 for Outstanding Sound Mixing and 2005 for Multi-Camera Picture Editing. The series has also been recognized with a prestigious Humanitas Prize and it received three consecutive Producers Guild Award nominations, from 2004-2006.

“Scrubs” is produced by ABC Studios. Bill Lawrence (“Spin City”) is the executive producer and creator. The series is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format, with 5.1-channel surround sound and Spanish subtitles via secondary closed captioning. A TV parental guideline will be posted closer to airdate.

Episodes of “Scrubs” will be available on ABC.com the day after airing on the network for users to watch online.

When a mother and her child are both at risk at the time of childbirth, a father makes the tough decision to try and save both lives. Another patient has been in and out of the hospital for months, while waiting for a heart transplant. What happens when everything seems to go right? Do the results really even each other out?

This is a clip that I spent some time editing together using three portions from the episode to make the story make sense. The cutting should be pretty fluid, though. I hope that you enjoy this clip.

This time, it deals with test results that could effect the life of someone you really care about.

Giving someone news that could forever change their lives can be a scary thing. On the one hand, it could be for the positive, and that would be the ideal situation. But on the other hand, it could be earth shattering news that devastates them. This episode deals with Dr. Dorian finding out some news, and hoping that a mistake was made.

Jordan’s brother Ben (Brendan Fraser) comes into the hospital after piercing his hand with a nail-gun; however Dr. Cox and J.D. later become worried when his hand will not stop bleeding. J.D. therefore decides to wait before informing Ben of his positive blood test result, and asks the lab to check the result. They do so over a montage accompanied by “Hold on Hope” by Guided by Voices

Stress is something that can come with any job, and recognizing that is important. It is something that, if you don’t deal with it in a healthy way, it is possible that it can drag you down.

During rounds, J.D. is doing exceptionally well. However, there is one other intern who is equally as good at being a doctor as him – Nick Murdoch. Nick has a patient, Peter, who keeps getting worse. Nurse Roberts keeps him updated on Peter’s status. Meanwhile, Turk gets frightened that he could make a mistake in surgery and kill someone. After Elliot asks Carla if Turk was alright, Carla gets upset that Turk doesn’t talk to her about his problems. Dr. Cox eventually gives both Turk and Carla advice on how the stress of how the hospital can make people not want to talk about their problems.

True to the emotional roller coaster that medical professionals handle and deal with, working at the hospital.

Scrubs is definitely one of my favorite shows, and, although it has it’s share of immorality, it is the moral episodes are the ones that give the show it’s heart and soul.

This is a clip from the fourth episode of the first season, My Old Lady. This episode’s writer won a 2002 Humanitas Prize for this episode.
