In fact, it is Xena herself who invents CPR in her desperation to revive the dead Gabrielle.

As this show dealt with a lot of hard hitting action, there was always a chance that CPR might come up at one time or another. Did they manage to correctly display CPR for the world to see? Well, there were a lot of episodes that featured CPR, but the one scene that I’m going to talk about this time is from season seven, episode ten.

In the scene, FBI Agent Renee Walker (played by Annie Wersching) attempts CPR on someone who they just pulled out of a truck before it exploded. Her arms are bent, not locked, and the compressions are shallow, not deep. Nor do the compressions come anywhere close to the 100 per minute rate that is supposed to be done.

I hope that you enjoy this cautionary tale on having a plan of escape in case of a fire emergency.

When Jack and Kate find Charlie hanging in the jungle, they cut him down and Jack goes to work checking for a pulse and listening for breathing. When he doesn’t find either, he gives two rescue breaths and proceeds to compressions. And when continuous compressions and rescue breaths don’t appear to be working, Jack gets frustrated and doesn’t give up. He balls up his fist and begins really pounding Charlie’s chest.

This scene happens in Season 1, Episode 11: All the Best Cowboys have Daddy Issues

Obviously the new 2010 guidelines change the order that Jack would have done things, and he would have started with compressions first. But his arms didn’t look like they were in a straight and locked position to me. It just might have been the angle that we see it, though. We also never get a good look at the depth of his compressions. What do you think of the CPR in this scene?

We’re going to look at one scene per movie or television series for each entry. We’ll be looking at classic scenes from films like The Sandlot and television series such as Lost and Scrubs. If you have suggestions as to other movies and TV shows to look at for an entry, do let us know!

Let’s have fun with this series. We’ll try to get clips whenever it is possible, but if not, then we’ll grab some screen captures from the scenes.

A girl remembered a lesson that she learned from an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants and rescued her friend, who had begun choking on her gum. This is yet another case of video training pulling through, even though it was not intended to be a training video for the heimlich maneuver. In fact, Nickelodeon cannot find an episode during which the Heimlich maneuver is performed. Here’s the story.

Miriam, a Long Beach Middle School seventh-grader, and her “BFF,” Allyson Golden, had just finished rehearsing the “West Side Story” classic, “I Feel Pretty,” for an upcoming choral competition when their teacher cracked a joke that had the 12-year-olds erupting in laughter.

She said there was an episode where Squidward swallows a clarinet, but SpongeBob reaches down his throat to pull it out. In another episode, SpongeBob’s pal Patrick tries to perform a “slimelick” maneuver by reaching around a clam, “but it didn’t work,” she said.

Neither Miriam nor Allyson were concerned with such technicalities.

“It didn’t exactly show the Heimlich maneuver, per se, but SpongeBob kicked Squidward in the stomach the same way you would put pressure with your hands,” Allyson said. Miriam says she is also a fan of medical shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” but never had any formal training in the technique.

She rejects any suggestion that she is a hero.

“I mean heroes are people who literally risk their lives to save people,” Miriam protested. “I mean I did something that really anyone could if they tried.”

“Allyson was chewing gum, which she shouldn’t have been,” Miriam recalled Friday in a mock tattletale voice during an interview in the principal’s office. “We were laughing and then the gum gets lodged in Ally’s throat. And she stopped laughing, which was weird because Ally laughs a lot.”

That’s when Miriam says she recalled an episode of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon, called Squidtastic Voyage, where she believes she saw SpongeBob use the Heimlich maneuver to retrieve a clarinet lodged in the throat of another character, Squidward.

“And I get her up and I do the Heimlich and the gum goes flying out of her mouth,” she said.

Allyson, who pleads guilty to chewing a wad of Trident Original Flavor, realized almost immediately what her friend had done. “I gave her the biggest hug and I was like, ‘Miriam you just saved my life. I owe you big time.’ And she’s just, ‘Oh, no, it was no big deal.’”

Casual games developer and publisher Legacy Interactive® today announced a licensing agreement with Universal Pictures Digital Platforms Group (UPDPG) to develop video games based on the popular television drama series House M.D. and the classic TV mystery series Murder, She Wrote. Legacy is transforming the successful medical mystery series House M.D., into a compelling game for both the PC and Nintendo DS™ where players make life and death decisions in the role of their favorite physicians from Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.

In the game, players will take turns stepping into the shoes of the skillful staff of the Diagnostic Medicine department which includes Dr. Taub, Dr. Hadley (AKA Thirteen) and, of course, the maverick medical genius himself, Dr. Gregory House. Players are part of the diagnostic team that attempts to diagnose and treat a variety of patients with complex illnesses. The game consists of five unique cases that represent the rare and fascinating types of maladies that viewers have come to expect from the popular medical drama.

Murder, She Wrote will be adapted as a light adventure, hidden object game on the PC that evokes the feel and themes of the long-running television series. The game, which features five all-new mysteries, takes place primarily in the quaint New England town of Cabot Cove, Maine. Each case follows acclaimed crime novelist Jessica Fletcher, a sharp-eyed senior citizen with a nose for clues, as she unravels a series of puzzling murders. Each mystery is a standalone story with its own clues and beautiful locations ranging from Maine to Vermont to England. Helping Jessica solve the crimes will be other well-loved characters from the show, including Dr. Seth Hazlitt and Sherriff Mort Metzger.

“Legacy’s success in developing television franchises such as NBC’s Law & Order as games gives us confidence that they will again deliver engaging interactive experiences to fans of House M.D. and Murder, She Wrote,” said Bill Kispert, vice president and general manager, interactive, Universal Pictures Digital Platforms Group. “Given the dynamism in the casual gaming sector and robust online distribution channels, we believe the timing is ideal to bring well-known TV franchises to videogames,” said Ariella Lehrer, President and CEO of Legacy Interactive.

Daley today thanked the producers, crew and cast members of the NBC drama “ER”, from Warner Bros. Television, for their contributions to Chicago.

Currently in its fifteenth and final season, “ER”, the longest running production ever to film in Chicago will complete its final shoot in the city this weekend.

“For the past 16 years the cast and crew of ‘ER’ have come to Chicago to film scenes that feature the urban character of our city – from landmarks like the Michigan Avenue Bridge

to diverse neighborhoods like this one,” said Mayor Daley near the production set in the city’s Uptown neighborhood. “Although ‘ER’ is set in a fictional hospital, the drama showcases Chicago as it truly is – an urban city of immigrants with strong neighborhoods, attractive surroundings, and abundant cultural and recreational opportunities.”

Joined by “ER” executive producer Christopher Chulack and “ER” cast members, Noah Wyle, Parminder Nagra, and David Lyons, the Mayor proclaimed it “‘ER’ DAY IN CHICAGO” and urged all Chicagoans to be aware of the many contributions the series has made to help the image that Chicago enjoys worldwide. Chulack then presented the Mayor with a large framed autographed poster of the current cast of “ER”.

The Mayor also stressed the importance that the film industry has on the City’s local economy. “ER” has pumped nearly $33.5 million into the local economy during its 16-year stint filming in Chicago. Since 1989, more than 800 feature films and television projects have contributed more than $1.3 billion to the local economy and provided more than 250,000 local hires. At least 50 television shows and 30 films were shot in Chicago last year.

“These productions also showcase our city to a national and international audience, which is more important than ever as we seek to become the host city for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Mayor Daley.

MovieMaker Magazine recently ranked Chicago as the number one city for independent moviemakers to live and work in 2009.

This week’s episodes of Scrubs had a few problematic areas, but were overall pretty good ones. The problems lay in the humor of the second episode especially being overly crass at times. The inappropriate comedy isn’t my cup of tea, though the episodes did provide some good clean humor as well as interesting storylines to help offset it.

“My Absence” – Dr. Cox has a rare moment of conscience while J.D. takes a brief respite from work at the hospital. Meanwhile, Turk and Carla share some big news, on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 (9:00-9:30 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode was a great one, as lessons are learned about staying true to yourself, and holding onto your values. I am not the biggest fan of the intern Denise, though. At least not her character’s comments from time to time. I do enjoy seeing her go through life lessons, though, as she’s so out of touch with other people’s emotions. Overall, though, I liked this episode rather well. It was the better of the two for the evening.

“My Comedy Show” – J.D. and Turk organize their historically unfunny annual sketch show with the new crop of interns, on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 (9:30-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode’s title leads you to believe that it’s going to be incredible. It does have a few great moments, such as the impressions of the different characters on the show done by the new interns. That was a classic scene. But other than that, there was a joke about abortion that I didn’t really like…. at all… but it was fleeting and pretty morally ambiguous, so moving on. There was a return cameo from Lavern (Nurse Roberts), the old head nurse, during a flashback to J.D. and Turk’s comedy show from when they first started at Sacred Heart. I wish Lavern was still a character on the show every week, as she represents a moral center that I love.

There was one moment, however, that was so brilliantly executed that makes it all worth it. When J.D. and Turk hug. It’s so hilarious that myself and everyone I was watching it with couldn’t stop laughing for at least an entire minute. And most of them haven’t seen that many episodes of the show.

Overall, this week’s episodes were so-so and not ones that I would show to people seeing the show for the first time. I am hoping that next week picks things back up.

This week’s episodes were terrific, but curiously absent from the cast was Dr. Chris Turk. I know that this year is definitely a year of change for the show, as they make their way toward the season finale, and perhaps the passing of the torch to a team of new Doctors for a possible ninth season (fingers crossed). Anyway, let’s get to brass tacks.

“My New Role” – When Dr. Cox becomes overwhelmed in his new role as Chief of Medicine, he does the unthinkable and reaches out to Dr. Kelso for friendship, on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3 (9:00-9:30 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode is focused on Dr. Cox in his new role as Chief of Medicine. All he wants to do is get out of his office and see patients, and all that he gets done throughout the day is paperwork and dealing with the questions and requests of employees of the hospital. It’s a great look at what happens when faced with a new role that people don’t understand from the outside.

It also features a problem that is very real in the hospitals these days, with a shortage of nurses and overworked nursing staff. It’s not an isolated problem and this episode brings that to light.

He and Dr. Kelso have a few heart to hearts during Dr. Cox’s first few days on the job, and it makes for a very entertaining and insightful look at hospital management from the upper-management’s perspective.

Dr. Cox even has a list posted next to his door of people that are either always allowed in, sometimes allowed in, and never ever ever ever ever ever allowed in. That third list has three names, which made me laugh out loud as a long-time fan of the show: Dr. Dorian, Hooch and Jordan. If you’ve been watching the show regularly, you’ll know why.

“My Lawyer’s in Love” – It takes a village to help Ted take the first step when he falls in love at first sight with a ukulele player. Meanwhile, Perry learns the hard way that he simply can’t handle everything on his plate, on “Scrubs,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3 (9:30-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

This episode features Ted’s accapella band. Ted Buckland is the hospital’s lawyer, who lacks confidence in his skills with ladies. Dr. Dorian and the Janitor try to help Ted out, when he sees a girl that he likes.

Also in this episode, Dr. Cox gives new intern Ed a chance to prove that he’s willing to put in the work to succeed at Sacred Heart. Ed is one of my favorite of the new interns, and it’s interesting to see where they took his character.

I really enjoyed this hour of Scrubs, and am definitely looking forward to next week’s episodes. If the show is not pickd up for a ninth year, I’ll be a sad camper.
