California: First State to ban Trans-fats
Going into effect in 2010, the new legislation represents a “strong step toward creating a healthier future,” according to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Trans-fats have been linked to coronary heart disease. They are chemically altered vegetable oils, used to give longer shelf-life to food.
Some cities have already banned trans-fats, however, including New York City, Philadelphia and Seattle. Food makers and restaurant chains have been experimenting with replacements for the oils and foods that contain the trans-fats.
