There always seems to be things that pop up in business to keep one humble. Frustrated customers who are really more angry at the situation than at the customer support professional, a leaky window in the programmers office every time we get a driving rain that can’t be fixed by the window repair company. Not to mention the little derailments like cans of Coke accidentally left in the freezer too long, exploding, heaving slushy cola all over the interior of the freezer. We open the door to find frozen stalactites hanging from every bar and brace in the freezer.

Oh, speaking of kitchen problems, how about the time one of our professionals was distracted from washing dishes in the break-room. He left the water running as he ran out to answer a compliance call for one of our treasured customers. Water filled the sink and was now cascading down onto the floor, under the cupboards, and into the basement office below.

I’ll never forget the programmer who found it. He walked into the customer solutions office with a freshly made mocha java in one hand, swirling his spoon in the coffee with the other. Very peacefully, he said “Is it bad that there’s water pouring over the break room floor and running out into the hallway?”

Well, this weekend was another one of those humbling times. Our director of IT noticed that at around 9pm EST we discovered some technical issues with one of our vendors which effected a number of our customers.

Monday morning we found out just how much our customers rely on us over the weekend. There were more than the average number of voicemails and e-mails. We knew we needed to contact our students who were effected by the issue.

Monday morning is when I really saw what kind of team we have at ProCPR.org. Everyone sprang into action and began calling and emailing the students and visitors who were effected by the issue. It was great to watch our team of professionals roll up their sleeves and do what it took to contact our customers and make every effort to communicate our sincere wish to be their favorite training company. Everyone who left a message was contacted by mid day.

It can be a real challenge to run a company with all its quirks and hiccups from time to time. But the good part about having these little set-backs is that it allows an opportunity to look back and see how a team of professionals can work together and that they all have the vision to help those who save and improve precious lives.

I’ve turned 40.

I know that I’ve turned forty because as I sat at my computer, watching the very beginnings of the new day wrestle with the lazy star filled skies of night, a notion to turn on some extremely invigorating Kenny Tamplin came to mind. As the coffee maker’s trickling sounds melted into screeching guitar licks surrounded by driving base chords and a drum like a monotonic jack hammer filled the office space, my mind became cluttered, scattered and reckless. I couldn’t formulate the feelings and thoughts I was about to write anymore. My blood pressure became elevated, evident by the restlessness of my hands and the full hot feeling in my ears and neck.

I couldn’t put my finger on what was bothering me. I tried to write once more, only to be distracted and frustrated as the next music track began to throb in my ears. Then it came to me. The music was driving me crazy!

I quickly turned off the music and clicked on a new CD I bought for my lovely family and myself on my birthday. The name of the CD is called “Lakeside Retreat.” It’s a smooth and soft melody filled with the chirping of early evening crickets and peeper frogs. The sounds that bring me back to early springtime sitting on the deck overlooking our pond and wooded back yard.

Stars began to sneak out for a night of frolicking and memories of love and peace filled my heart. My blood pressure began to decrease and feelings of appreciation filled my heart.

I began to remember the philosophical memoirs that ached to be written with edgy conviction for ethical free enterprise. Visions of a successful business that saves precious lives directly and indirectly while providing for my best friend and eternal companion. Visions of our lovely children playing in the warm sunlight and the smell of fresh coffee filled my senses.

Is this what it is to be 40? If so…let it be.

Some time ago, my friends and business partners urged me to consider writing a regular blog entry from the helm of ProCPR.org. I, being more of a verbal communicator and not especially confident with proper grammar, naturally felt reluctant to begin. After dragging my feet and finding many excuses as to why a blog is really simply a “Roy Shaw Brag Book” or something of very little importance to anyone other than my closest family and friends, I have researched other corporate blog sites and tried to get my now greying head wrapped comfortably around the real purpose of read worthy blog entries.

It’s not that I’ve ever been against Corporate blogs or the administrative transparency blogs can create, it’s just that for a man of my age (turning 40) never truly understanding what blogs were for, or from what interesting matter they are created, I simply did not want to cut down another “virtual tree” to waste kilobytes of “ink” on worthless trivial material that amounts to nothing more than a “see I told you I could blog about stuff I wouldn’t read myself!”

In the end, having written this first blog I think that I may enjoy blogging after all. Not only is it a bit therapeutic but has encouraged me to learn about something new. In the end I hope that the contents of my blogging will not only be of interest to me, but be of some interest to others who may choose to read it too.

Hmmm. Do I sign off?

Sincerely?

Best Wishes?

Love Roy? How does one end a blog? Well, I’m sure I’ll get the hang of this soon. Besides, like all of my projects, I have a lot of help behind the scenes.

Ah well,

C’est la vie
